Documentary Review: Green

Hey Everyone, sorry about the late post!
The Documentary “Green” is directed, produced, and edited be a graduate student; Laura Dunn. The film was produced in 2000, and focuses on “Cancer Alley” in Louisiana, formerly known as “Cancer Corridor”, which is an area about 100 miles between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Dunn travels from town to town between Baton Rouge and New Orleans to film the effects of petrochemical plants that are being dumped in the Mississippi river and also the effects of the chemical refineries in neighborhoods. In each town she reports personal stories of how people are affected by the environmental crisis in Louisiana.

Summary

She begins her journey in Baton Rouge. She shows an area in this town where there are organic vegetables being sold next to a toxic waste clean up. I was very shocked to find out how close people really live to these dangerous chemicals. In this town there is a 13-year-old girl who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare case of cancer that produced numerous tumors all over her body. The girl believes her diagnosis was caused by the environment she lives in.

Another story that stuck me in this film was the case of a 2-year-old boy who was diagnose with Rhabdomysarcoma, a rare case of brain tumor. This story takes place in Gonzales, just 30 miles from Baton Rouge. I was compelled believe this diagnosis had something to do with the area they live at after this case. I was even more certain when another child living just 3 miles from the 2-year-boy was diagnosed with the same type of cancer. Why aren’t doctors or community leaders taking note of this and taking actions? According to the video it seems like only average community members are doing something to get this crisis to be notice. And most of the government officials are just thinking about their pockets, considering that taking a step will be very costly. A lady interviewed in this film explains this very well by saying “They don’t see human being all the see is green; M.O.N.E.Y. Some people will sell their soul for a dollar”. The EPA isn’t doing much about this problem either.

In Convent, a town not too far from Gonzales there was a lady interviewed about the environmental situation in her town. I was really touched by her words. She says that most of these big manufacturers have brain washed consumers and that have become “consumeristic” and these companies convince us he have to buy their products to survive. For instance plastic, we all find it useful, but she argues we can live without just like we did before it was invented. Another lady mentions how we have become immune to this environmental crisis, passing it down from generation to generation.

My thoughts
I was touched by all the stories in the documentaries. I didn’t even know about “cancer alley” until I watched this film. It really heartbreaking to know that government officials aren’t doing much to help the people in these communities. It seems like there will always be conflicts over money and power everywhere. The EPA should be ashamed of themselves, can’t believe all they’re trying to do is to scrape two feet off a nine feet affected soil to make thing better; which is going to help at all in the long run.

Share and Voice: Second "Eyes Open Award for Critical Thinking" Goes to Kaileigh!

Hey Everyone!

Kaileigh's Nature Log earned an award on her share and voice "Northland Country Club". I really like how she challenged her boss' point of view and actually convinced him to do something good for the environment. Good job Kaileigh!

Share and Voice 3: Environmental Pictures

Hey everyone!

I'm running out of ideas of share and voices, since I'm not very creative. So I came up with a weird idea; I think. I was going through pics of me and my twin on facebook and I realized we had some environmental related pics. So I thought it would be interesting to put them some together.

So here they are!

-The first one is my twin and I at Minnehaha Falls in in South Minneapolis. Taken during our senior in HS.
-The second pic is a water fall, near that lake. Taken on the same day, May 2007.
-The third pic sort of reminds me of what has become food in this country, consedering the fact fertizer is currently being used on organisms.
-The last picture is just a pic of me promoting the "going green" movement without even realizing it, since I've been wearing a lot of green lately.
I hope this is interesting enough. I wonder how I am going to come up with 7 other ideas since I'm already blanking out. Thanks for checking them out!

Eye Opener: Environmental Working Group

I chose a mascara because I use it pretty much everyday. I am surprise by what long terms effects that links to it. I never put any thought into the cosmetic products I use. I guess I have to now. What scares me the most is that using mascara links to cancer. I wonder how that takes place?
I hope I am going put more thoughts when buying anyy cosmectis. Maybe even search a specific for more info before buying it.

Reflection weeks 5&6

Hey Everyone!

I can’t believe it’s already the sixth week of school!!! Time is flying!
Weeks five and six focused on food. I learned a lot about food and where it comes from.

During week five, I wrote my first review, on “Feeding the World”; which was very informative. I learned that our world is getting overpopulated and slowly running out food to feed us all. The article also stated the UN has a low/medium scenario that predicts fertility; averaging 1.9 children per woman for all regions by 2025, and even with the low/medium scenario Africa’s population would continue to rise approaching 2 billion people in 150 years. We also watched a video called “Diet for a New America” that mostly talked about the amount of meat products consumed by Americans; which was a tremendous amount compared to other countries worldwide. One thing that struck me the most in this film was that 80% of our grains are to animals and 12 pounds of grains equals only one pound of beef. If only we would stop eating so much meat then, we could save all the food used to feed animals. During week five I also did an eye opener called “Score Your Diet”; which revealed to me that I was harming the environment and my health greatly by the foods I consume.

Week 6 was very interesting; the most fascinating part about it was the documentary we watched called “Future of Food”. This video was very touching; I was very surprise to hear how many farmers are suffering greatly because the government wants to regulate Genetically Modified foods. I was also very shocked by the amount of food being GM in the United States right now. Most experts don’t recommend GM foods, but yet there aren’t even labeled on food products. So most people don’t really know when they’re actually eating it. Now I am wondering how much food I eat that’s genetically engineered. In week I also had to do an eye opener on reading 10, called “Scientists Say a Quest for Clean Energy Must Begin Now”. It basically talked about the Kyoto Protocol; which I didn’t really know what it was until I read this article. The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement on global warming reached by the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997. The major industrial nations pledged to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases between 2008 and 2012. Unfortunately the US hasn’t signed it yet.

I learned a lot of new things about food during weeks five and six; I was startled by a lot facts. I’m hoping there would be better measure taken about food in the future worldwide, and that I myself would make better choices regarding the foods I eat.

Share and Voice: Organic Foods

Hey Everyone!

Dr. V mentioned in class on Tuesday that info on organic foods would be a good idea for a share and voice, so I figured since I’m behind with the share and voice I might as well do it. Thanks for the idea Dr. V!

Here’s a definition of Organic Foods
from Wikipedia:

Organic foods are made according to certain production standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides and artificial fertilizers, free from contamination by human or industrial waste, and processed without irradiation or food additives.[1] If livestock are involved, they must be reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones, and generally fed a healthy diet. In most countries, organic produce may not be genetically modified.

Here are websites with more info on organic food.

Share and Voice: Going Green By Switching to Wireless!

Hey Everyone!
I have been living on campus at UMD for two years now. We don't have wireless in the apartments or dorms; we have to buy ethernet cables to connect to the internet. In the past two years I've bought 3 ethernet cables just because the tip keeps breaking. Fortunately this year I got room that somehow receives wireless, and it got me thinking going wireless would definetely save all that plastic wasted for ethernet cables.

It would probably be costly for UMD but I think it would be a great idea.

Thanks for reading!!

Eye Opener: Review of Reading # 10

I was assigned to read chapter 10 “Scientists Say a Quest for Clean Energy Must Begin Now”. It was a very short article but a little hard to understand. I got the main point but I had to read it twice to fully understand it. I was struck by a lot of the facts in the article but the opening of this article struck me the most. It stated that “to supply energy needs for 5o years from now without further influencing the climate, up to three times the total amount of energy now generated using coal, oil, and other fossil fuels will have to be produced using methods that generate no heat-trapping greenhouse gases, says the scientist in today’s issue of the journal Science”. I couldn’t help but imagine how much our current source of energy is hurting the environment.

The article mentions that the Kyoto Protocol would be a good way to go to produce clean energy; it includes binding deadlines for modest cuts in gas emissions. According to the article the Bush administration has refused to accept the Kyoto Protocol, calling for more research, which according to some experts would require way more attention and money.

I think it’s very unfortunate that the US hasn’t signed the Kyoto Protocol, considering that it is the nation that produces the most emissions. This article was very educational for me; I didn't know much about the Kyoto Protocol until now.

Eye Opener: CSPI

I chose to do do my eye opener on Score Your Diet. Mostly because I was curious to find out what my score would be, and also to find out where I need the most improvement regarding my diet. After I entered my servings of each a certain category of food I eat per week I found some outrageous numbers! According to the website 60+ is excellent. 15-59 is good. I didn't even get up to 15 at any column.

The food category I scored the highest at was veggies, beans/nuts totaling up to 9. I was surprised because I eat more servings of chicken/turkey each week. I scored lowest at the beef category putting me at a -5. I don’t really know why I scored that low. I’m guessing it’s because beef is not considered that healthy, especially the chemically grown ones, which I can’t distinguish grass fed beef and chemically fed beef. I found out that I need the most improvement at the Environmental section. This didn’t surprise me because unfortunately I don’t really think about the environment much when it comes to choosing my diet. The first thing that always comes to mind is my health, even though I don’t always do well with that either. I am going to try and look for the grass fed beef when I go to the grocery and buy that instead even though it might be more expensive.

These results were kind of an eye opener for me about my diet. I think I need to be more considerate about what I eating; focusing on the long-term effects rather than just because I am hungry and want to eat a specific type of food. I definitely need to keep the environment in mind when it comes to my food choices, since I scored so low on that column.
